What is compounding?
Compounding is fundamental to the profession of pharmacy. Before the mass production of drugs by pharmaceutical manufacturers, pharmacists compounded medications to accommodate the individual patient’s needs. The demand for professional compounding has increased as both healthcare professionals and patients realize that commercially available medications cannot always meet the needs of every patient. In addition, some patients require special dosages or dosage forms that are not mass produced by drug manufacturers. At Gloyer’s Pharmacy, we have been striving to meet all of our customers’ needs since 1960.
When is compounding appropriate?
Compounding is appropriate when current commercially available products do not meet the individual patient’s needs. We can also compound medications when the commercial product has been discontinued by the manufacturer or is unavailable in a particular dosage form.
Is a prescription required for a compounded medication?
Yes, a prescription order from a physician is required for the pharmacist to compound your medication to meet your specific needs
Can you bill my insurance?
Yes, we can bill most insurance companies for compounding prescriptions. Whether your insurance will cover your specific medication often depends on the company and your specific plan. Just provide your prescription insurance card and we will do the rest.
What dosage forms does Gloyer’s make?
At Gloyer’s Pharmacy, our compounding specialist can make a variety of dosage forms including: capsules, suspensions, gels, creams, ointments, suppositories, and troches.
Does a compounding pharmacist have special training?
All pharmacists are taught in pharmacy school how to properly compound medications, and many compounding pharmacists have advanced training after pharmacy school graduation. Compounding pharmacists utilize their unique pharmacy skills, knowledge, and creativity to work with you and your prescriber to prepare medication in a dosage form that has been customized to your particular needs.
How does Gloyer’s Pharmacy ensure the quality of our compounded medications?
